Disabled people invited to train as Fitness Instructors at Portway Lifestyle Centre (Sandwell)

Aspire logoInstructability Logo

InstructAbility, a multi award-winning project joins forces with the innovative Portway Lifestyle Centre to offer disabled people a FREE opportunity to become qualified fitness instructors, with a course starting in April.

InstructAbility, was created by Aspire, the spinal injury charity and YMCAfit, the fitness industry training provider, to enable unemployed, disabled people to train as gym instructors. The newly qualified instructors are then placed within gyms to engage more disabled people in fitness sessions.

Hilary Farmiloe, National InstructAbility Project Manager says,

“We are really excited at the prospect of delivering the InstructAbility program at Portway, which will be the first course delivered outside the South East region.  The Centre is designed to link health and well-being more closely with physical activity and InstructAbility is designed to make fitness accessible to everyone, so this is a valuable partnership.

Including disabled people as part of the workforce can encourage other disabled people to use the facilities. It sends a message that the gym is a place where everyone can feel welcome and enjoy the benefits of exercise. We hope to have a qualified instructor on placement at Portway, working with the various services to engage more people in fitness sessions.”

The FREE programme, funded by Sport England is open to unemployed, disabled people who are over sixteen years old and have some gym user experience.  You can apply online at www.aspire.org.uk. Call: 07917 822977 or Email: instructability@aspire.org.uk for further information.

Autism West Midlands – NEW parent/carer course and Music Workshops for young people

Autism West Midlands LogoPractical Interventions Course for parents/carers

Please find details of a new course which takes place over 5 weeks (Tuesday evenings) in November/December. The course is aimed at parents/carers of children on the autism spectrum who have to physically intervene with their child to manage their challenging behaviour. The course will be delivered by one of our AWM training team using the Studio III approach http://studio3.org/about/

Parents/carers need to contact Autism West Midlands for a booking form. Due to the nature of the course there are only 12 places so they will be booked on a first come first served basis on receipt of the booking form and course fee (£20 for all 5 sessions). Similarly because of the limited number of places we are asking parents to be sure that they are able to attend all session dates before they book.

We are very grateful to Shropshire Council/Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group for the opportunity to bring this training to Shropshire. For this reason the course is only open to parent/carers of Shropshire children under 18 with autism/autistic traits.

Please contact Hilary McGlynn at Autism West Midlands for a booking form or more information: 01743 210940 or email hilarym@autismwestmidlands.org.uk

NEW! ‘Scrappies’ Training Days…

Scrappies logo (title)

‘Scrappies’ (The Shropshire Children’s Scrap Store Recycling & Resource Centre)are delighted to announce that as part of their Short Break provision for this year they will be holding six training days at ‘Scrappies’ premises in Church Stretton.  These training days are available to people that work or volunteer at local clubs or groups that provide opportunities to children and young people with disabilities or additional needs.

If you have had a ‘Scrappies’ workshop you will already know the benefits of creative arts activities. This new opportunity will allow those attending a training day to visit the store, look at the kinds of materials available, plan a six week programme and ‘create’ your own art box full of resources. Topics covered will be the ‘creative’ play experience, safety and planning a programme of activities for your own setting and collecting the resources/materials from the store.

The training day will normally run from 10.00am until 3.00pm and will include a light lunch. There will be a small cost to cover the resources/materials you gather for your group.

It is difficult to manage times and days when individual people are available so if you think you might have your own larger group then ring Lesley on 01588 672610 and book the day just for yourselves at a time to suit you. ‘Scrappies’ artists can work evenings, weekends and holidays. Obviously individuals will be welcome to join in with other groups and there is always an advantage in meeting others to share ideas.

Please call Lesley to ask about training days taking place from September 2013 to February 2014.

Creative Workshops for children & young people:

As well as training days for adults, ‘Scrappies’ can also offer a creative workshop session for your group of children and young people. If you haven’t had a creative workshop for your group previously then please contact ‘Scrappies’ as they have nine workshops still available – Halloween and Fireworks are always good themes! 01588 672610

Funding Award for the Shropshire Parent Carer Forums

For the last 12 months the Shropshire Parent and Carer Council (PACC) and Parents Opening Doors (PODS Telford) have been working together on a lottery bid for the Reaching Communities Programme.  We are really pleased to be able to announce that they have been successful in this bid and have secured a grant in excess of £300,000 to support their work for the next three years.  The funding will enable PACC and PODS to continue and develop their work across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.  The main focus of the work will continue to be on providing parent carer participation opportunities, accessible and relevant information and the chance to access a peer to peer support network. The funding comes at a key time for parent carer forums with the increased role they will have to play in the delivery of the SEN reforms in particular.

The funding will enable Participation Coordinators to be recruited for both Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin, along with increased administrative support.  There will also be a Face 2 Face Coordinator recruited to deliver the Face 2 Face Scheme across the two areas, offering support from trained befrienders to more families.

“We are really excited about this news.  There is so much work to be done and we hope that the funding of these posts and the associated activity, will enable us to take full advantage of the current opportunities for parent carers to be involved in decision making, on an individual and strategic level.  We also want to provide more opportunities for families to meet and share experience and knowledge because we know from our previous work how much this is valued.”

To make the most of this opportunity however what PACC really need is your support.  PACC is totally reliant on the information that local parent carers share with them about their daily lives and experiences. They need to know what works and what needs to be improved and they need you all to say it out loud.  There will be increasing opportunities for parent carer representatives to get involved in PACC work, and to support this PACC will be providing training so that those of you who would like to get involved can develop your skills and confidence in this area.

If you are interested in training to become a PACC parent rep or would like to become a member of PACC they would love to hear from you, please contact Sarah Thomas on 0845 601 2205 or email enquiries@paccshropshire.org.uk . More information about PACC’s work is available on their website but please bear in mind this website is currently under review and so is not updated regularly.  www.paccshropshire.org.uk
